Deduplication and Compression

Back up more. Store and send less.

Intelligent deduplication and compression reduce cloud backup storage costs and bandwidth usage significantly. Only changed, unique data is uploaded after the initial backup.

What We Deliver

Deduplication and compression capabilities.

Block-Level Deduplication

Duplicate data blocks are identified and stored only once. Common files shared across multiple devices are backed up a single time, not once per device.

Inline Compression

Data is compressed before upload. Typical compression ratios of 2:1 to 4:1 on business documents, databases, and application data reduce storage consumption significantly.

Changed-Block Tracking

After the initial backup, only blocks that have changed are uploaded. A 500GB server may only upload 2GB per day after the initial seed. Backup windows stay short.

Bandwidth Throttling and Scheduling

Backup bandwidth is throttled during business hours to protect video calls and other latency-sensitive applications. Full bandwidth available outside working hours.

Source-Side Deduplication

Deduplication runs on the source device before data is transmitted. Only unique, compressed data crosses your internet connection, minimising bandwidth consumption.

Storage Cost Reporting

Monthly reports show actual storage consumed versus raw data size. Deduplication and compression ratios reported so you can see exactly what you are saving.

How It Works

From data profiling to optimised cloud backup.

01

Data Profile Analysis

We analyse your data types, change rates, and existing duplication levels. This determines expected deduplication ratios and storage cost estimates before deployment.

02

Deduplication Policy Configuration

Block size, deduplication scope, and compression algorithms configured to match your data profile. Settings optimised for your specific mix of file types and applications.

03

Bandwidth Throttle Setup

Backup bandwidth limits configured for business hours and out-of-hours windows. Throttle schedules aligned with your working patterns and internet connection capacity.

04

Initial Backup with Seeding

Initial full backup completed with deduplication and compression active. For large datasets, local seeding options available to avoid extended initial upload periods.

05

Ratio Verification

Deduplication and compression ratios measured after initial backup. Actual storage consumption confirmed against estimates. Configuration adjusted if ratios are below expectations.

06

Ongoing Reporting

Monthly storage reports show consumed storage, deduplication savings, and compression ratios. Trends tracked over time to identify data growth and optimisation opportunities.

UK Case Studies

Storage savings achieved across the UK.

Engineering Consultancy, Sheffield

Challenge: A Sheffield engineering consultancy had 12TB of CAD files to back up to cloud. Their internet connection was 100Mbps and they estimated it would take 3 weeks to complete the initial upload.

Outcome: Source-side deduplication and compression reduced the effective upload size to 4.2TB. Initial backup completed in 8 days. Ongoing daily backups use less than 5% of available bandwidth.

Multi-Site Retailer, Leeds

Challenge: A Leeds retailer with 8 branches was backing up the same product images and documents from every site. Cloud storage costs were growing faster than their data, with significant duplication across sites.

Outcome: Cross-site deduplication identified 60% duplication across branches. Storage costs reduced by 55% without any change to backup coverage or retention periods.

NHS GP Practice, Bristol

Challenge: A Bristol GP practice had a 50Mbps internet connection shared between clinical systems and backup. Overnight backups were overrunning into morning surgery, causing network slowdowns for clinical staff.

Outcome: Changed-block tracking and compression reduced nightly backup data by 85%. Backups complete in under 2 hours. No network impact on clinical systems during surgery hours.
